How to Groom for Cold Weather
1. Take shorter showers
Overcome the urge to soak for twenty minutes in scalding hot water every morning. "Hot water strips off more of your skin's natural oils," explains Jeffrey Roth, M.D., of Park Avenue Dermatology Associates in New York. "Keep showers to under ten minutes."
2. Moisturize—a lot
Apply a thick lotion like MD Skincare's Intense Body Moisture as soon as you get out of the shower, to seal in moisture. For the really rough spots (think hands, knees, and elbows), opt for something even more heavy-duty, such as Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve.
3. Save face
First, rethink your shaving routine. "Shaving cream is soap in a can," Roth says, meaning that it can dry out your skin the way cheap bar soap tends to do. Try Clinique Cream Shave, which basically has Vaseline in it. One thing that shouldn't change is the SPF in your facial moisturizer. UV rays don't disappear just because it's gray outside.
4. Stop flaking out
Rinse your hair with cool water right before getting out of the shower. It keeps more natural oils in your hair. Also, use a shampoo that can help stave off dandruff, such as Bumble and bumble's Scalp Rebalancing Therapy.
