Even if you feel like a sucker paying fifteen bucks for a quick trim, a haircut’s usually one of those things you leave to a professional. Sure, trimming up the top and sides is pretty easy for anyone with scissors and a mirror, but it’s the back of the head where things can get gnarly. Which is why the Philips Norelco 180 Degree Hair Clipper is so genius. With a swiveling head that lets you turn the clipper a full ninety degrees to the right or left (and five settings to make the cut as long or short as you like), it makes cutting hair in the back a cinch. Mine’s paid for itself after only a month of saved visits to the barber, even if the learning curve has meant a few oh shit! moments. A quick tutorial: don’t use the shaver past a few inches above your neck unless you’re going for the G.I. look, and try a shorter setting (1 or 2) near the bottom inch, moving to a 3 or 4 as you bring the shaver up your hair to create a tapered effect.
